Bernie Hunhoff is a Democratic member of the South Dakota State Senate, representing District 18. He was first elected to the chamber in 2014. Hunhoff served in the South Dakota House of Representatives, representing District 18 from 2008 to 2015. While in the House, he served as Minority Leader.

Hunhoff attended the University of South Dakota-Springfield. He then received his B.A. from Mount Marty College in 1974. Hunhoff was a legislative aide for United States Representative Frank Denholm in 1974. He then worked as a writer for Watertown Public Opinion from 1974 to 1976, and for Madison Daily Lender from 1976 to 1977. From 1977 to 1980, he worked in public relations for the University of South Dakota School of Medicine. Hunhoff also worked as publisher for the Yankton County Observer from 1978 to 1985 and for the Missouri Valley Observer from 1979 to 1989.

He has been the owner, editor, and publisher of South Dakota Magazine since 1985. He has been stuck on gumbo trails in Lyman County, been hissed at by rattlers at Porcupine and forced to eat everything from lutefisk to roast goat. “It’s all part of the job of publishing South Dakota Magazine,” he said.

I very much enjoyed Bernie and Matt’s dialogue on South Dakota’s history, both where it has been and [their perspective on] where it is going.
